Brunei's serene little capital is all gold domes and water villages ~ and almost everything, from the great mosques to the royal museum, is free. The one splurge worth making is the rainforest canopy at Ulu Temburong.

Stay in the compact city centre near the waterfront ~ the mosque, museum, and Kampong Ayer jetties are all walkable, and Temburong tours pick up from hotels.

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

The golden-domed icon of Brunei, floating beside a ceremonial stone barge in its lagoon. Free ~ visit outside prayer times, and come back at night when it glows.

Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

The country's biggest mosque ~ 29 golden domes for the 29th Sultan. Grander and quieter than its famous cousin; robes are lent free at the entrance.

The open-air market along the canal ~ jungle produce, kuih sweets, and grilled everything. Weekend mornings are liveliest; try the ambuyat if you're brave.
