Belgrade is a big, buzzing, budget-friendly city where nearly every headline sight is free. The fortress, the great cathedral, and the old-town streets cost nothing ~ save your dinars for the legendary nightlife.

Stay in Stari Grad (old town) near Knez Mihailova. The A1 minibus or bus 72 links the airport; the fortress, cathedral and nightlife are walkable or a short ride.

Belgrade Fortress (Kalemegdan)

A sprawling fortress-park above the meeting of the Sava and Danube. Free to roam ~ come at sunset for the rivers turning gold, and browse the military museum's outdoor tanks.

Church of Saint Sava

Belgrade's cobbled bohemian quarter of old taverns (kafanas) and live music. Free to stroll ~ come in the evening when the accordion players start and the rakija flows.

Republic Square

Free

The city's main meeting point ('at the horse'), fronted by the National Museum and Theatre. Free ~ the National Museum itself is free on Sundays and cheap the rest of the week.

Knez Mihailova Street

Free

The grand pedestrian spine of the city, lined with shops, cafés, and street performers. Free ~ it links Republic Square to the fortress, so walk it end to end.

Gardoš Tower (Zemun)

A millennium tower over the old riverside town of Zemun. Cheap to climb ~ the real reward is the walk up through Zemun's fishing-village lanes and a fish lunch by the Danube.
