Brussels is a city best consumed on foot (and by waffle). The Grand Place, Manneken Pis, and the arcades are free ~ the only real ticket is the Atomium, and the rest of your budget is chocolate and beer.

BRU

Brussels Airport (Zaventem)

Stay near the Grand Place ~ the historic core is walkable. Trains link Zaventem to the central stations in about 20 min.

Grand Place

Free

One of Europe's most beautiful squares, ringed by gilded guildhalls. Free ~ come at night when the facades are lit, and time a visit for the biennial August flower carpet if you can.

Atomium

A 102 m model of an iron crystal from the 1958 World's Fair. The ticket gets you inside the spheres and a city view ~ the exterior and Mini-Europe park below are free to admire.

Manneken Pis

The famous (and famously tiny) peeing-boy statue. Free ~ and much smaller than everyone expects. He's dressed in a different costume most days; check the schedule for a laugh.

Royal Palace of Brussels

Free (summer only)

The king's ceremonial palace opens free to the public from late July to early September ~ don't miss the Mirror Room ceiling tiled with 1.4 million beetle wing-cases. The facade is free year-round.

Cinquantenaire Park & Arch

A grand triumphal arch in a formal park, flanked by art and military museums. The park and arch are free ~ a calm green escape a short metro ride from the centre.

Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert

One of Europe's oldest glass-roofed shopping arcades (1847), lined with chocolatiers. Free to stroll ~ duck in out of the rain and taste-test pralines at Neuhaus and Mary.
