Macau blends Portuguese cobblestones with mega-casinos, and almost all of its UNESCO old town is free to wander. The only real tickets are the Macau Tower and whatever you lose at the tables.

Getting there

Macau International Airport

Many arrive by ferry or the HK-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge from Hong Kong (about 1 hour). Base on the Macau Peninsula near Senado Square; casinos run free shuttle buses.

Ruins of St. Paul's

Free

The soaring stone facade of a 17th-century church ~ Macau's icon. Free to visit; climb the steps early for a crowd-free photo, and duck into the crypt and museum behind it.

Senado Square

Free

A wavy Portuguese-tiled plaza ringed by pastel colonial buildings ~ the heart of the old town. Walk from here to the Ruins in 10 minutes, snacking on almond cookies and pork chop buns.

A-Ma Temple

Free

The 500-year-old temple that gave Macau its name. Terraced up a hillside with incense coils and sea-goddess shrines ~ the oldest and most atmospheric temple in the city.

338 m of view over the Pearl River Delta ~ and the world's highest bungee jump (MOP 3,000+) if you're brave. The glass-floor skywalk outside is the adrenaline-lite option.

A vast replica of Venice with indoor canals and a painted sky ~ free to stroll. The gondola ride is a paid novelty; the real fun is the surreal free people-watching.

Guia Fortress & Lighthouse

Free (cable car MOP 5)

A 17th-century fort crowned by the oldest lighthouse on the China coast. Take the tiny Guia cable car up for a few patacas, then walk down through the shady hill park.
