Base along the riverside (Daun Penh) near the Royal Palace. The city is flat and tuk-tuk-friendly; the Killing Fields are a 30-min ride out.

The gleaming home of Cambodia's king. Go at 8 am opening before the heat, and dress modestly ~ shoulders and knees covered, or they'll sell you a cover-up at the gate.

Inside the palace walls ~ a temple floored with 5,000 silver tiles and home to an emerald Buddha and a life-size gold one studded with diamonds. Same ticket, don't miss it.

A former school turned Khmer Rouge prison, now a genocide museum. The audio guide is worth it ~ harrowing but vital context. Visit before the Killing Fields to understand them.

Choeung Ek Killing Fields

The memorial site 15 km out of town, centred on a stupa of skulls. The excellent audio guide walks you through with restraint ~ a tuk-tuk there and back is about $15.

Wat Phnom

The temple on the hill that gave the city its name, set in a leafy roundabout park. A quiet, green breather ~ watch for the resident monkeys and the fortune-tellers at the base.

Central Market (Phsar Thmey)

Free entry

A landmark 1937 Art Deco dome radiating aisles of gold, gems, watches, and food. Free to browse ~ great for cheap eats and a fix of the city's everyday bustle.
