Where East meets West ~ Ottoman bazaars, Austro-Hungarian facades, and the scars of the 1990s siege sit within a few blocks. Most of Sarajevo is free to explore, with just a couple of small museum tickets.

Sarajevo International Airport

Base in or near Baščaršija, the old bazaar. The centre is compact and walkable; the Tunnel of Hope is out by the airport, so pair them.

The Ottoman-era heart of the city, centred on the wooden Sebilj fountain. Free ~ sip Bosnian coffee, watch coppersmiths at work, and eat ćevapi where the locals crowd in.

Latin Bridge

Free

The spot where the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand lit the fuse of WWI. Free ~ the little museum on the corner tells the story for a couple of marks.

Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque

The grandest Ottoman mosque in the Balkans (1531). A small ticket lets non-worshippers in outside prayer times ~ dress modestly; scarves are provided at the door.

Sarajevo City Hall (Vijećnica)

A striped neo-Moorish jewel, burned in the siege and painstakingly rebuilt. The interior and its stained-glass ceiling are worth the ticket ~ the facade is free to photograph.

Tunnel of Hope

The hand-dug tunnel under the airport that kept besieged Sarajevo alive from 1992–95. Deeply moving ~ it's out by the airport, so combine it with a taxi or a guided siege tour.

Yellow Fortress (Žuta Tabija)

Free

A hilltop bastion with the best free view over the city's minarets and red roofs. Locals gather here at sunset ~ in Ramadan a cannon fires from here to break the fast.
