Tirana is Europe's most colourful, chaotic, cheap capital ~ a city of painted tower blocks and Cold War bunkers. The squares and mosque are free; the bunker museums and the cable car up Dajti are the paid highlights.

Tirana International Airport (Nënë Tereza)

Base around Skanderbeg Square ~ the centre is small and walkable. An airport bus runs to the middle of town in about 30 min; Bunk'Art 1 and Dajti are on the edge.

Skanderbeg Square

Free

The vast pedestrian heart of the city, with the Skanderbeg statue and mountains behind. Free ~ the surrounding pastel and mirror-clad buildings make it a photographer's playground.

Et'hem Bey Mosque

Free

A delicate early-1800s mosque famous for frescoes of trees and waterfalls ~ rare in Islamic art. Free ~ dress modestly and visit outside prayer times, right on Skanderbeg Square.
