Yerevan, the 'pink city' of volcanic tuff, is one of the most affordable capitals in the region. Almost everything worth seeing ~ the Cascade, the squares, the parks ~ is free, with just a couple of small museum tickets.

Zvartnots International Airport

Base around Republic Square or the Cascade. The centre is compact and walkable; monasteries like Khor Virap and Garni are half-day trips out.

Yerevan Cascade

A giant limestone stairway of fountains and modern sculpture. Ride the indoor escalators up (free) past the Cafesjian art, then step out at the top for the Mount Ararat view.

Republic Square

The grand pink-stone heart of the city. Come back after dark (usually 9 pm in summer) for the musical dancing-fountain show against the National Gallery.

Mother Armenia & Victory Park

Free (small military museum inside)

A towering statue of a sword-bearing woman above the city, reached by walking up from the Cascade. The terrace is the best free panorama in Yerevan.

Armenia's sacred (though now-Turkish) peak dominates the skyline on clear mornings. For the postcard shot, take a half-day trip to Khor Virap monastery at its foot.
