Yerevan, the 'pink city' of volcanic tuff, is one of the most affordable capitals in the region. Almost everything worth seeing ~ the Cascade, the squares, the parks ~ is free, with just a couple of small museum tickets.

Base around Republic Square or the Cascade. The centre is compact and walkable; monasteries like Khor Virap and Garni are half-day trips out.

A weekend open-air flea market for carpets, khachkar carvings, Soviet relics, and jewelry. Best on Saturday and Sunday ~ haggle gently and pay in cash.
Free (Khor Virap day trip extra)
Armenia's sacred (though now-Turkish) peak dominates the skyline on clear mornings. For the postcard shot, take a half-day trip to Khor Virap monastery at its foot.
